Imagine a couple whose income is over 251k, and whose bonus income is 125k. Their tax bill for 2008 would include a 90% tax on the bonus income.
By resigning in early December, and remaining unpaid in December the couple limits their income to about 245k.
The couple would not be impacted.
Even better, the husband or wife would get themselves fired mid year, and collect unemployment for 6 months. They would still be better off than if they had been working full time.
